Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of the Dentist

Patient using sedation dentistry in EllingtonDo you have a fear of going to the dentist? Whether it’s from a bad experience as a child or just negative stories from other people, you aren’t alone. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 75% of people suffer from dental phobia. For some, it prevents them from visiting the dentist at all. The good news is that with modern dental technology, as well as a friendly team, you have nothing to worry about. Continue reading to learn more about sedation dentistry in Ellington and how it can help you overcome your dental anxiety.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses certain medications to help anxious patients relax during dental visits and procedures. Patients who opt for this technique are awake and able to communicate with the dental team, but in a more calm, relaxed state. Here are two common ways that this is done:

  • Nitrous Oxide: Many people are familiar with this type of sedation. Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is administered to patients using a nasal mask. The effects take place quickly and allow you to go through with your appointment in a state of wellbeing. You won’t be completely unconscious, but you will be more comfortable and relaxed. It can be easily adjusted to your comfort level and it requires no recovery time afterwards. This means that you can drive yourself home from your appointment.

  • Oral Conscious Sedation: If you have moderate to severe dental anxiety, this could be the right method for you. You will be prescribed with a small pill that you are asked to take an hour before your appointment. By the time you arrive, you will be perfectly relaxed for your procedure. You will still be conscious enough to respond to the dentist and staff. Most patients who have this done don’t remember much about the procedure at all. Because of the effects of the medication, you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment.

With your chosen sedation method, and the help of your friendly team, you will finally be able to feel more comfortable when going to the dentist.

What Other Methods Can I Use to Relax?

  • Ask your dentist if you can wear headphones and listen to something you enjoy. Listening to relaxing music or an intriguing podcast is more pleasant than the sound of dental instruments.

  • Remember to focus on your breathing. This may seem obvious, but many people hold their breath when they are nervous. Slow, regular breathing is an effective way to reduce stress.

  • Ask your dentist about the procedure. If you know exactly what will happen, this takes out surprises that can cause anxiety. By asking for a step-by-step rundown of the procedure, you will know exactly what to expect.

  • Talk to your dental team. If there is anything that they can do to make you feel more comfortable, they will do their best to accommodate. They won’t know unless you tell them.

Putting off your dental visits only leads to bigger issues in the future. By working with your dentist to tackle your fears, you will be able to show off a healthy, happy smile without having to experience high levels of stress.
